Our chimney services
Chimney repointing
Old mortar is raked out and the joints are repointed with weather-resistant mortar, colour-matched where needed. See our roof and chimney pointing page.
Chimney flaunching
The flaunching around the pots is broken out and renewed, so water runs off instead of soaking into the stack. See our chimney flaunching page.
Lead flashing
Where the chimney meets the roof, lead flashing keeps water out. We renew it in Code 4 and Code 5 lead, properly dressed and fixed.
Chimney rebuilds
When a stack is badly cracked, leaning or crumbling, rebuilding it from the roofline up is the safe, lasting fix. See our chimney rebuilds page.
Why chimney problems shouldn't wait
A chimney is often the highest and most exposed part of a house. Water getting into the stack can cause damp inside, and loose pots, bricks or flaunching can fall. Many leaks blamed on the roof actually start at the chimney. If you've got a leak and aren't sure of the cause, see our roof leak repairs.
Chimneys and gas appliances
If your chimney or flue serves a gas fire or boiler, any work that affects the flue should be followed by a check of the appliance by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Tell us about any appliances when you book.
Older homes and conservation areas
Chimneys are part of the character of Preston's older streets. In conservation areas, removing or significantly altering a chimney can need permission, and some areas, such as Fishergate Hill, have extra controls. Like-for-like repairs are usually the right approach on older homes.
Frequently asked questions
What is chimney flaunching?
It's the sloped mortar around the base of the chimney pots that throws water off the top of the stack.
Can a leak come from my chimney?
Yes. Failed pointing, flaunching or flashing are some of the most common causes of leaks.
Do I need scaffolding for chimney repairs?
Usually, yes, for safe access. We'll explain what's needed when we quote.
Can you remove a chimney stack I don't use?
Removing a stack can affect the structure and may need permission in a conservation area. Ask us and we'll advise on the right approach.
