Leadwork Preston: Lead Flashing, Valleys and Gutters

Wherever a roof meets a chimney, a wall or a roof window, or two roof slopes meet, lead is what keeps the water out. When it's badly fitted, cracked or lifted, it's one of the most common causes of leaks. North W Roofing carries out leadwork Preston homeowners and businesses can rely on, in Code 4 and Code 5 lead, dressed and fixed properly.

    Our leadwork services

    • Chimney flashings: the lead where a chimney meets the roof.
    • Abutment flashings: where a roof meets a wall, such as on an extension.
    • Lead valleys: where two roof slopes meet.
    • Box gutters and lead gutters, often found on older homes.
    • Roof window, dormer and bay details.
    • Heritage lead details on period homes.

Code 4 and Code 5 lead

Lead sheet comes in different thicknesses, known as codes. The higher the code, the thicker the lead. Code 4 is widely used for flashings, while thicker Code 5 is used where the lead needs to be tougher, such as some valleys and gutters. We use the right code for each job.

    Signs your leadwork has failed

    • Lead lifted or loose around a chimney or along a wall.
    • Cracks or splits in the lead.
    • Mortar or sealant missing where the lead is tucked into the brickwork.
    • Damp on a chimney breast or a ceiling next to a wall or chimney.
    • Leaks along a valley after heavy rain.

    Why leadwork needs doing properly

Lead moves as it heats and cools. If pieces are too long, badly fixed or not lapped properly, it can crack or lift and let water in. Properly dressed and fixed lead lasts for many years. Sealant or a quick patch over failed lead rarely lasts. For older homes, Historic England has practical advice on maintaining and repairing an older home, including roofs.

    Leadwork on chimneys

Most chimney leaks come from failed flashing, pointing or flaunching. See our chimney repairs and chimney flaunching pages.

    Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between Code 4 and Code 5 lead?

Code 5 is thicker than Code 4. Code 4 is widely used for flashings, and Code 5 where the lead needs to be tougher.

Can a leak come from the lead flashing?

Yes. Failed flashing around chimneys, walls and roof windows is one of the most common causes of leaks. See our roof leak repairs.

    Can you replace lead valleys?

Yes. We renew lead valleys and lead gutters.

    Can sealant fix my flashing?

Sealant is rarely a lasting fix. Renewing the lead properly lasts much longer.
