Roof Repairs Preston: Tiles, Slates, Ridges and Flashing

Slipped tiles, a cracked slate or a loose ridge can let water into your home long before you notice a stain on the ceiling. North W Roofing carries out roof repairs Preston homeowners and landlords can rely on, finding the cause, fixing it properly and leaving the roof watertight. We're a veteran-led, family-run roofing business based in Preston, working across Lancashire.

Common roof repairs we carry out

    • Slipped, cracked or missing tiles, replaced and secured.
    • Broken or slipped slates, replaced to match the existing roof.
    • Loose or cracked ridge tiles, re-bedded and pointed so they stay put.
    • Failed flashing around chimneys, walls and roof windows, renewed in lead.
    • Valleys and abutments where two roof slopes or a roof and wall meet.
    • Small areas of storm or wear damage that don't need a whole new roof.

If the problem is a leak and you're not sure where it's coming from, see our roof leak repairs page. If it's urgent, see emergency roof repairs.

    How we repair a roof

    Finding the cause

The visible damage isn't always where the problem starts. Water can travel along felt and timbers before it shows inside. We look at the whole area around the damage, not just the obvious broken tile.

    Matching what's there

Repairs should blend in and perform like the rest of the roof. On slate roofs, that means matching the slate size and type; on tiled roofs, the tile profile and colour. We use Code 4 and Code 5 lead for flashings and colour-matched mortar for ridges and pointing.

    Fixing it so it lasts

Ridge tiles are re-bedded on fresh mortar and pointed, flashings are dressed and fixed correctly, and replacement tiles and slates are secured the right way for the roof.

    Repair or replace?

A repair is usually the right answer when the roof is basically sound. If tiles or slates are failing all over, the battens are rotten or the felt has broken down, repairs can become a false economy. We'll tell you honestly which we think you need. If it's time for a new roof, see our roof replacement service.

    Older homes and conservation areas

Many of Preston's older homes date from its growth as a cotton town in the 1800s, and parts of the city are conservation areas, such as Fishergate Hill, which also has an Article 4 direction. On older roofs, like-for-like repairs with matching materials are the right approach. If your home is listed or in a conservation area, changing roofing materials can need consent, so check with Preston City Council first.

    Frequently asked questions

Can you replace just a few tiles or slates?

Yes. Small repairs are a big part of what we do, as long as the rest of the roof is sound.

Why does my ridge keep coming loose?

Usually because the mortar it's bedded on has cracked or washed out. Re-bedding on fresh mortar and pointing it properly fixes it.

Do you repair slate roofs as well as tiled roofs?

Yes. We repair slate, clay tile and concrete tile roofs, and match the existing materials. See our slate roofing page.

    Do you work for landlords?

Yes. We carry out roof repairs for homeowners, landlords and businesses.
